백남준: 오래된 것, 새로운 것
백남준의 전위적인 위성 생방송 〈굿모닝, 미스터 오웰〉 40주년을 맞아 기획된 책입니다. 백남준 연구의 권위자인 디터 다니엘스(Dieter Daniels) 교수가 집필을, 1982년부터 백남준의 결정적 순간을 기록해 온 사진가 임영균이 화보를 맡았으며, 백남준의 대표작 〈다다익선〉을 설계한 건축가 김원이 발행인으로 참여하여 역사적 권위를 더했습니다. 책의 타이틀인 ‘오래된 것, 새로운 것’은 과거의 기록을 재해석해 혁신을 이끌어낸 백남준의 철학을 압축한 문장으로, 이 프로젝트의 디자인 전개에 있어 핵심적인 태도이자 방향성이 되었습니다.
우리는 보존을 목적으로 하는 가장 견고한 매체인 '책' 안에, 기존의 관습을 끊임없이 깨트렸던 백남준의 실험적 에너지를 어떻게 담아낼 것인가 고민했습니다. 그 해답으로 책의 기능적 구조와 백남준의 무질서함이 팽팽하게 부딪히는 ‘의도된 충돌(Deliberate Tension)’을 컨셉으로 설정했습니다. 단순히 담론을 전달하는 것을 넘어, 종이와 인쇄라는 물리적 한계 안에서 백남준의 시각적 해프닝이 현재 진행형으로 일어나도록 설계한 디자인적 장치입니다.

Nam June Paik: Something Old, Something New
This project is a publication designed to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Nam June Paik's monumental satellite broadcast, Good Morning, Mr. Orwell (1984). The book features scholarly contributions from Dieter Daniels, a preeminent authority on Paik, alongside rare visual records by photographer Lim Young-kyun, who captured Paik’s definitive moments since 1982. Architect Kim Won, the structural designer of Paik’s iconic The More the Better, joined as the publisher, lending profound historical weight. The title, Something Old, Something New, encapsulates Paik’s philosophy of driving innovation through the reinterpretation of the past, serving as the core attitude and direction for this project’s design development.
We contemplated how to capture Nam June Paik’s experimental energy—which incessantly shattered existing conventions—within the "book," the most rigid and standardized medium for preservation. Our solution was "Deliberate Tension," a concept that creates a taut balance between the functional structure of the book and Paik’s inherent disorder. This is more than a vessel for information; it is a design mechanism engineered to induce Paik’s visual "happening" as an ongoing event within the physical constraints of paper and print.
